New Non-Lethal Self-Defense Tool Wins on Simplicity +

In a perfect world, people would not be concerned about violent crime. But in our world, murderers, rapists, and violent people do exist and their victims number in the hundreds of thousands every year. That may be why the demand for self-defense training and non-lethal weapons is exploding. This is according to a new report published by Allied Market Research on trends and forecasts for the less-lethal self-defense weapon markets.

A non-lethal weapon (AKA less-lethal weapon) is designed to help someone escape rather than kill or seriously injure an attacker. Many people do not have the “stomach” to shoot another human. Stabbing someone with a knife seems downright gory. If you’ve ever cut into a turkey and hit a bone, you get the idea.

That’s why products like pepper spray and Mace have been so popular. But, there is a reason police officer training includes dealing with spray. It’s not because it works all of the time. It’s because it doesn’t.

In the stress of an attack, getting the spray out and aiming accurately is so difficult that officers are trained to be able to function in a fight in case they spray themselves in the face or get caught downwind.

According to former police officer and sheriff, Chris Sutton, there are three criteria that make a weapon effective for self-defense.

1. It has to be accessible. If you have to dig for it in your glove compartment or bottom of your purse, you are already in trouble. Attacks happen up close and fast. Bad guys don’t yell across a parking lot that they are coming to get you.

2. It has to be deployable. In other words, easy to use under stress. Can you quickly and easily engage with the weapon even if the attacker has his hands on you already?

3. Easy to conceal. Concealment doesn’t always mean hidden. Police officers use their metal clip boards and heavy flashlights all of the time to bash bad guys. These are weapons that are hidden in the open.

There is a new less-lethal self-defense tool that meets this criteria. My Defense Tool® (MDT) is a discreet defensive weapon that is comfortably strapped in the palm of the hand. It’s small enough to allow someone to use their phone, shop, carry items etc without it getting in the way.

The MDT body is about the size of a screwdriver and it’s tapered to multiply the impact of any strike. The tip leaves a unique wound on the assailant and scrapes DNA from flesh and hair into the body to provide evidence to law enforcement.

Sutton, who runs a global self-defense organization, says the MDT is an ideal choice because of its simplicity, “Using the MDT is like pounding on a table. You just pound, scrape and tear. Pounding is a gross motor skill that will not be lost in the high adrenal state of an attack. There are no moving parts, triggers, blades, or sprays. The MDT might be the perfect defensive tool in an imperfect world.”

Demand for Self-Defense Weapons is Exploding +

Expert Says Less is Best When Choosing a Non-Lethal Weapon

Concern for personal protection is driving an increase in sales of non-lethal self-defense weapons for American adults, especially women. This is according to a new report published by Allied Market Research on trends and forecasts for the less lethal and self-defense weapon markets.

In 2014, the market was valued at $58.10-million and is expected to be valued at $82-million by the end of 2023.

The growing crime rate against traditional soft targets such as students, senior citizens, women, and children is creating a surge in the market for non-lethal weapons.

To meet that demand, companies are creating self-defense tools that are light and efficient but do not look like weapons. An example of that is the My Defense Tool® (MDT).

With no buttons to push or spray that might blow back in your face, the MDT also captures evidence to aid police in identifying the attacker. The tip leaves a unique wound pattern and scrapes and stores DNA from skin, hair, and clothing fiber.

According to the President of the global self-defense training organization, Cobra-Defense International, Chris Sutton, tools like the MDT provide an ideal choice for discreet non-lethal protection. According to Sutton, “Non-lethal weapons that don’t spray or fire projectiles are more comfortable for people in a house with children.”

He says that any weapon that requires aiming and pushing a button or pulling a trigger requires lots of practice under stress. Victims may also lose a more complex weapon to the attacker and have it used against them. After all, many trained police officers are shot with their own weapons. The MDT is strapped to the hand so it’s difficult to drop or have it taken away and has no moving parts.

“By design, there are no buttons to push or triggers to pull. The MDT doesn’t even look like a weapon, but it’s a formidable defensive tool.  It’s like the ninja of defense. The bad guy won’t really see it until it’s too late.”

Do You Have the Stomach for Self-Defense? +
Do You Have the Stomach for Self-Defense? +
y John Graden

When choosing a self-defense weapon, most people will decide what to go with based upon influence from friends, family, work colleagues and web-based research. What this common process fails to address may be the most important aspect of all. Emotion. Do you have the stomach to use the weapon? Let’s take out the mechanics of how the weapon works and explore if you are a good match for your weapon emotionally.

There are two categories of self-defense weapons or tools. Lethal and non-lethal (AKA less-lethal).

Lethal Weapons

A lethal weapon means a deadly weapon. Any weapon that is capable of producing great bodily harm or death is a lethal weapon. While there are many laws regarding guns, anyone can carry a kitchen knife without a permit.

Concealed Firearms

There is a huge difference between shooting paper and shooting people. Beyond the mechanics of getting the gun out, using it, and not losing it to your attacker, the very idea of shooting another human is not something many people are comfortable with.

Knives and Stabbing Devices

If you’ve ever cut into a chicken or turkey and hit the bone, you get an idea of how visceral stabbing a person is. It is the application of a lethal weapon up close and personal.

Non-Lethal Weapons

A non-lethal weapon (AKA less-lethal weapon) is designed to help someone escape rather than kill or seriously injure an attacker. Keep in mind that some non-lethal weapons are not allowed or require a permit in certain states.

Sprays

Pepper Spray and Mace have the advantage of distance. That’s comforting because who wants to get close to an attacker? That also may be a false sense of security.

Accuracy is often an issue with sprays. Police officers actually get sprayed in the face during training so they will be able to function in case they end up spraying themselves or get the residue in their eyes during a struggle.

The fact they can learn to resist the pain of the spray means some attackers can too. Few things will get your knees knocking faster than an attacker that you miss or that ignores the spray and keeps on coming.

Stun Gun or Taser

Stun guns and Taser deliver a powerful electrical shock to the attacker. While a Taser can be fired from a distance, a stun gun requires direct contact. Both require a positive and negative connection to the target so if just one side hits and the other misses, you’re going to get an emotional shock.

Like the sprays, there is a process required to use either of these devices. You have to pull it out, aim, and keep it out of the hands of your attacker. Any failure and you’re in for the fight of your life.

My Defense Tool (BestSelfDefenseTool.com)

There is a new self-defense tool that is designed for simplicity. My Defense Tool (MDT) is strapped to your hand so you won’t drop it or have it taken away from you. It’s also small enough to allow you to use your phone, shop, carry items etc without it getting in the way.

Using the MDT is like pounding on a table. You just pound, scrape and tear. Pounding is a gross motor skill that will not be lost in the high adrenal state of an attack. There are no moving parts, triggers, blades, or sprays.

The MDT body is about the size of a screwdriver and it’s tapered to concentrate the impact of any strike. The tip leaves a unique wound on the assailant and scrapes DNA from flesh and hair into the body to provide evidence to law enforcement.

MDT greatly embellishes your natural reaction to an attack which is to hit and pound, not pull a trigger or aim. Because the MDT works with your instinctive response, it is the easiest weapon to use physically and emotionally.

The choice of self-defense weapon works best when the weapon is matched with the emotion and limitations of responding in a high-stress situation that leaves little room for error. During an attack, the stress level is so high that any complexity in employing a weapon greatly increases the chance of failure. The more basic and simple the weapon, the more likely you will be able to escape. In our research, the MDT wins on simplicity.

My Defense Tool® Reviews

Alain Burrese-SurviveandDefend.com +

My Defense Tool is a simple product to be used for justifiable self-defense without lethal force. There are many small less-than-lethal tools designed to be used for defending oneself, and this one has a number of advantages over some of the others available.

It is very light weight and fits comfortably in your right hand. (You can carry it in your left with a little twist of the strap when holding it. But it is designed for the right hand.) It doesn't look like much and I doubt it would draw much attention. There is an adjustable elastic strap to keep it in place.

My Defense Tool is designed for women to wear while out walking, running, or even out and about doing other activities. I really think it is useful for those out exercising because it will be in your hand when you don't have a place to carry any other self protection tool. I also like that it is in the person's hand, rather than hid away where the person can't deploy it when needed. And because of the strap, you can actually use your hand for certain things without dropping the My Defense Tool. I also like that right on the cover of the box it says, “Helping Women Make Their Greatest Escape.” A woman carrying this doesn't have to beat a mugger up, or submit a bad guy. Those are not realistic expectations for most people who are attacked. The goal should always be to escape to safety. A strike or two with this tool can provide the opportunity to escape, and that is what self-defense is all about. Getting yourself home safe.

The hammer fist is a very simple strike to learn. It is one of the basics taught in many self-defense programs. I teach it in many of my classes, both self-defense classes and Active Shooter Response courses. I usually show how the strike can be intensified if you hold a pen, a key, or something else sticking out the bottom of your hand. This tool is specifically designed to stick out the bottom of your hammer fist to make your hammer fist strikes more powerful. There are a couple of notches in the striking surface (point, but not a sharp point) that would capture DNA from the attacker you strike to provide to law enforcement later.

No weapon or tool is the be-all-and-end-all of self-defense. There are layers to our self-defense and personal protection plan. These layers include awareness and avoidance, defensive tactics both unarmed and armed, less-than-lethal weapons as well as lethal weapons among others. The My Defense Tool is a very good option for a less-than-lethal tool to be easily carried, especially when out running, hiking or walking.

My Defense Tool is a simple, light and easy to use self-defense tool. As soon as I received it I went to try it on my BOB, and it felt good. I would recommended to anyone who needs a a self-defense tool that makes more sense.

I picked up a 'My Defense Tool' from John Graden and played with it on my bag. Great device. Extremey light weight, easy to slip on, and easy to use because the techniques are based on natural movements, in particular, the hammerfist. The protrusion on the end is low profile but would cause some serious pain to an attacker. It's like having a roll of quarters and a yawara in your fist. And it's under $20!

Overall summary

This device was sent to me by John Graden for evaluation. I think this less than lethal self-defense device is an inexpensive and effective weapon if you know how to use it, have a little self-defense training. I gave it to a female friend for a few days, age approximately 65, which goes out for walks in the evening, and she said that she liked it. She stated that it feels good, it’s discreet and easy to put on and still be able to use her phone, and she felt better about being able to protect herself. I recommend this device because it is easy to use, its discreet, inexpensive, and can do what it is intended to do.

Tim McCahan-Tim McCahan After School Sports +

If you are looking for an easy to use, most effective to utilize, highly comfortable, to just already have in your hand and you don't need to worry about killing someone than this is the self defense tool to have! The best thing I have seen over all the other non-lethal weapons ever. Best thing about this tool is, it is so hiddened and consealed. The element of surprize is the most effective and powerful element in real street self defense that there is, that's what makes this work!

Chris Sutton–SelfDefenseCertified.com +

There are three criteria that make a self-defense weapon effective and My Defense Tool® has all three. It's easily accessible because it's strapped to your hand. You'd much rather have this in your hand than pepper spray at the bottom of a purse. It's easy to use. If you can pound a table you can use this tool. It's easy to retain. Because it's strapped on, you won't drop it or lose to your attacker. My Defense Tool® works.
